Tunnel Road Trail

August, 2014: Jeff, Leigh & I took a hike on the Tunnel Road trail on the edge of Canon City, Colorado. The trail follows the Arkansas River and the Royal Gorge train tracks. This 4-mile hike (out and back) passes through many tunnels blasted through solid granite. It’s a beautiful hike with great vantage points of the river and the train.

Most interesting of all to me was the geology. There were some intrusive veins of rock, showing either volcanic intrusions into cracks in the substrate rock and different layers of sedimentary rock deposited and tilted over time. I wish we had a geologist with us to explain some of the unique features we saw. Look closely at some of the rock pictures for these features.
