Tombstone, Arizona

The Town Too Tough to Die

The legendary Tombstone is located in southeast Arizona, not far from the Mexican border. Close enough, in fact, the the “Cowboys,” as they called themselves, (the nemesis of the Earp brothers) would raid into Mexico to rustle whole herds of cattle.

I have to go to Tombstone at least once a year to get my “old west” fix. It’s a tourist destination, to be sure, but if you look beyond the shorts & tee-shirt clad visitors and the souvenir shops, you can get the flavor of what the town was like when Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday called the town home.

I drove into Tombstone one April morning about 6:00 a.m. to photograph the town without the crowds. You’ll never see the streets this deserted during prime time. There are lots of shots here. And this is after I culled out the really bad-to-average ones. A lot of what’s left are still not price-winners, but I kind of liked them. So they made the cut.
