Cholla

Sometimes called “Jumping Cholla” (pronounced: choya).

Urban myth: get too close and the heat of your body causes the needles to jump out and get you.

No, they don’t really do that. But, the tips of the needles are almost transparent, so you can be touching them before you know it. Get a cholla ball on you and it can be very difficult to remove. They are too sharp to pick off with your hands. The best tool is a pocket comb. Slide the teeth around the cholla ball and just flick it off.

Taken on a hike with my friend, Greg Nelson, on November 13, 2012.
